With the Garmin Instinct 3 out, creating a review of the Instinct 2 that I have had since December 2024 is only fitting. It has now dropped in price and is an attractive offer for people looking for a running watch that don't want to break the bank.
--------------------------
Overview:
PROS:
- Long Battery Life
- Rugged / Durable
- Works great for running
CONS:
- “Too” rugged
- Long GPS connection time
- Lower Customization
TLDR:
The Instinct 2 is a great option for a running watch, and I have had almost no problems with it. It is now definitely worth your money if you’re not quite ready to spend the big bucks to get a brand new model. It can be found for around $175 and will fulfill all your running needs.--------------------------
PROS:
Long Battery Life:
The Instinct 2 can go up to 28 days in normal mode, but does not last that whole time if you use it for running. However, like custom with Garmins, it lasts for many days and you will most likely only have to charge it once a week.Rugged / Durable:
The Instinct 2 is marketed as a more durable watch, and that isn’t unwarranted. This watch has a very rugged design and that also makes it very durable, meaning any bump or scrape won’t scratch or damage the watch.Works Great for Running:
Using this watch for the past three months, taking it trail running, running around a suburban environment, and running almost everyday, it has worked perfectly. The heart rate has always seemed pretty accurate besides a few times, and the GPS and pace is always on point.CONS:
“Too” Rugged:
The Instinct 2 is a rugged watch, but that also comes with it looking like one. For people in a more professional environment, it may be too rugged.Long GPS Connection Time:
Many times I will be ready to start my run, and I’ll have to wait around a minute for the GPS to connect or I just have to start running and hope it connects soon. This isn’t a big turn off however it can be frustrating.Black and White Screen / Low Customization:
While yes, there is a lot of customization for Garmin’s, the Instinct 2 is more limited as it does not have any color and many of the home screens aren’t compatible with the watch. While again, this is not a huge downside, it can be frustrating to find a watch face that you like that actually works for this watch.Overall:
Overall, this is a great lower-budget choice for entry-level runners. I have had a great experience with it, and you should too!
